Access the free required pre-course assessment at https://elearning.heart.org/course/423. Failure to complete it will prevent certification. Consider optional pre-course work and assessment if you lack confidence in this curriculum much of this will be covered in class https://elearning.heart.org/course/424 . Private onsite classes available for 6 to 30 participants; email or call for details. Bring a face mask in case the current infection control alert level requires it. Class end times are approximate, plan accordingly.

Nuvance Hospital Staff Only - AHA BLS Blended Learning Package

As this is a new process, please take a few moments to read everything below to ensure proper registration.

This class gives you access to the required online portion of the class and the required in-person skills practice and testing with an authorized instructor.  You will NOT be issued a certificate of completion unless you submit your proof of completion for the BLS heartcode online portion AND attend the in-person portion fo the training.

Who can take this class?  Only Nuvance staff who require this course for employment purposes can take this class.  Hospital staff are given seat priority in these classes.  Medical Practice staff in CT should see Medical Practice staff courses or Community Education courses.  We also have courses open to all for community education as additional options for training see the other courses not labeled as Nuvance Staff Only for these options.

Requirements:   Register with an email you check often – communication about your class is done via email.  The online portion of this course MUST be completed prior to attending class and you MUST bring a copy of the certificate of completion with you to class.  Failure to complete the online portion prior to attending will result in the instructor asking you to leave.  It’s a required pre-requisite for AHA to complete the online portion PRIOR to attending the skills portion and an ecard will not be issued without both the online portion and in-person skills being completed.  We encourage you to start your online portion at least 4 days prior to class so if you experience any difficulty, we have time to assist you.  We are not open 24/7.

How many times can I register?  Staff can register for ONE (1) class date per discipline every two years (BLS, ACLS, PALS) based on what's required for their position and if you need to reschedule you must email us to do so and we will transfer your registration to the new date (with any online portions that have been assigned to you).  Re-registering for the same class type can result in multiple charges and online portions assigned.  You cannot HOLD seats in multiple dates for the same class type. If you need to reschedule you MUST email CommunityEdu@nuvancehealth.org to do so manually.  Failure to do so will result in staff being charged a fee for the online portions as they are non-refundable to us once issued.

I am new or I am renewing is this class appropriate?  This blended learning class is appropriate for new, expired, or renewing students.  The online portion does a series of knowledge checks and will expand in any areas where the student needs further information so those who are experienced can move through the course faster than those who are new to the curriculum.

Do I need to pay a fee for this class?  All staff are provided a promocode to take the required BLS, ACLS or PALS classes at no charge.  If you do not have the current promocode or experience any difficulty email CommunityEdu@nuvancehealth.org for assistance or call 845-475-9742 during business hours.  Do not pay a fee if you experience any problems as we cannot refund it -  just reach out, we are happy to help!  Please note that those who are part of GME, UME or an international Nuvance sponsored program have a promocode unique to them and should email us for that current promocode.

How do I get the online portion of the class?  You will get an email receipt shortly after registering where you will see a keycode.  If you registered with a Nuvance email you should check to see if it is in junk, spam, trash or is on hold asking for approval to be released as Nuvance has multiple layers of security and it may take a little longer than a few minutes because of the security filters but you should see it within 24 hours.  This keycode is a pre-paid link to access the online portion of the training.

How do I launch the online portion of the training and access the required certificate of completion?  can see a brief video here on how to launch and access the online portion of your class to get started and how to print or email the required certificate of completion Brief Tutorial for Online Portion Access.  This is also listed under FAQs on our main website page.

Do I need a book for this class?  Blended learning classes do not require a book since you will have access to the online portions for this course for a period of 2-years so you can go back and refresh on the information at any time.  If you prefer to have a book to review material Nuvance staff can borrow one form any of the hospital medical libraries or staff professional development offices.

What locations are classes available for staff?

I can’t register, am having difficulty or can’t find courses I am looking for – what do I do?  Contact us at CommunityEdu@nuvancehealth.org or at 845-475-9742 during business hours for assistance.  We are happy to help you with this new process!

I am a staff member interested in taking CPR but it is not required for my position, can I take a class?  Email CommunityEdu@nuvancehealth.org for options.  We do offer basic non-certification courses open to all at no charge called American Heart Association Family & Friends training which you can find and register for on our site if interested.

Why are classes so long?  Class length is determined by AHA and it's curriculum requirements.  We have a contract with AHA that requires us to strictly follow the curriculum requirements for us to continue to be able to provide this training in-house.  Following those requires helps ensure that we reduce risk and liability for our providers, patients and our organization.  We utilize AHA training because it is the curriculum that has the most research and science to back not only their techniques but also the way individuals learn.  They update their materials every 5 years and set the standards in the industry.  It is also accepted by our thrid part regulators as an approved curriculum such as CMS, JACHO and local departments of health.  Smaller classes may fiinish slightly faster but each instructor must strictly follow the curriculum and requirements in its entirety to certify someone.

This is an appointment for a complimentary car seat check with a certified Safe Kids car seat technician.  Please see what to do and expect below.  You will be asked some key questions at registration so we can be better prepared to assist you.  There is no fee for this service.

Before the Car Seat Checkup

  • Be prepared to learn, not just watch the CPS technician install the car seat. They're trained to teach you.
  • Know your child's current weight and height.
  • Using the car seat instruction manual and the vehicle owner’s manual, try to install the car seat into your vehicle prior to your appointment if possible.  It's okay if it's not correct they will help you fix it!
  • Tip! Check the index of your vehicle owner’s manual for “child safety seats”.
  • Be sure to bring the car seat instruction manual AND the vehicle owner’s manual with you to your appointment if still available.
  • If possible, bring your child with you as well as another caregiver to help while you are learning.
  • Be prepared to learn. The CPS Technician is trained to educate you to install and use your car seat properly in your vehicle
  • You must be 18 years or older to schedule this appointment or have an adult present with you at the time of your appointment
  • Please bring your driver's license.

During the Car Seat Checkup

  • This one-on-one education typically takes 20-30 minutes, depending on your car seat and vehicle. The technician will take all the time you need until you feel comfortable that your car seat is used and installed correctly.
  • During the checkup, a CPS Technician will:
    • Fill out a car seat check form to document the process (including car seat type, location in the vehicle, misuse observations, etc.). The form may be electronic or on paper.
    • Review car seat selection appropriate for your child’s age, weight, and height as well as review factors that affect proper use.  The technician will ensure a proper fit for your child if the child is present.
    • Review the car seat instruction manual and the vehicle owner’s manual to ensure that both are being followed correctly.
    • Ensure that an appropriate seating position in the vehicle is being used.
    • Check the car seat for recalls, visible damage, and expiration date.
    • Guide your installation of the car seat. You are encouraged to ask to learn how to install the car seat in different seating positions with different installation techniques.
    • Discuss the next steps for your child, such as when to move to the next type of car seat.
    • Discuss your state laws and best practice recommendations for occupant safety.
    • Discuss the benefits of everyone riding properly restrained, including all adults.
    • Discuss safety in and around the vehicle.
    • Answer any questions you may have, so ask away.  Ensure you feel confident about installing your seat safely before leaving.

After the Car Seat Checkup

A car seat checkup is considered a success if you can answer yes to the following questions:

  • Did you help perform the installation?
  • Were your questions answered? If not, were you given direction as to who you should contact, or will the CPS Technician follow up with you?

This very brief video training created by AHA allows you to learn Hands-Only CPR in just minutes!

Hands-Only CPR performed by a bystander has been shown to be as effective as CPR with breaths in the first few minutes of an out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest for an adult victim. If you do not know how to administer CPR with breaths, don’t be afraid to act in an emergency; your actions can only help. Any attempt at CPR is better than no attempt. If you see an unconscious, unresponsive adult, call 9-1-1 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the classic disco song “Stayin’ Alive.” This song, and other songs with a rhythm of 100 to 120 beats per minute, mimic the rate you should push on the chest during CPR. The AHA still recommends CPR with compressions and breaths for infants, children, victims of drowning or drug overdose, or people who collapse due to breathing problems.  For those who are trained to give breaths Breaths and Compressions combined are still the best practice for victims of all ages.

Register for this class and you will get instant access to a brief training video you can watch from nearly anywhere & access to printable FAQ sheets, instruction sheets, and more detailed information on hands-only CPR if interested.  You can feel free to share the information with friends, family, or co-workers!

If for some reason you do not receive a confirmation email with this information please email communityedu@nuvancehealth.org and we will get that information out as soon as possible!

A bleeding injury can happen anywhere. We’ve all seen it happen too often—on the news or in everyday life. Life-threatening bleeding can happen in people injured in serious accidents or disasters. Instead of being a witness, you can become an immediate responder because you know how to STOP THE BLEED®.  A course developed by the American College of Surgeons.  This class is for those 18 and up.  Anyone under 18 would need to be accompanied by a parent.

The person next to a bleeding victim may very well be the one who’s most likely to save him or her from bleeding to death. By learning how to STOP THE BLEED®, you’ll gain the ability to recognize life-threatening bleeding and act quickly and effectively to control bleeding once you learn three quick techniques. Take the STOP THE BLEED® training course and become empowered to make a life or death difference when a bleeding emergency happens.

A STOP THE BLEED® course is for people who are interested in learning this lifesaving skill. The American College of Surgeons STOP THE BLEED® campaign has trained over 1 million people including students, teachers, and community groups. We are committed to training anyone who is old enough to understand what the course teaches and is interested in learning how to STOP THE BLEED® and save a life.

Our instructors will teach you live—in person, using training materials specially developed to teach bleeding control techniques. They will not only instruct you, but they will also be available to check your movements as you practice three different bleeding control actions. They will keep working with you until you demonstrate the correct skills to STOP THE BLEED® and save a life.

What stops bleeding? In a STOP THE BLEED® course, you’ll learn and practice three quick techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds out: (1) How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound; (2) How to pack a wound to control bleeding; (3) How to correctly apply a tourniquet. These three techniques will empower you to assist in an emergency and potentially save a life.

We provide this training at no charge to help more people in the community respond to urgent incidents.

We are following current state guidelines for COVID19 at this time which depending on the alert level may require wearing a face mask.  Please bring a mask to class.

This class is offered free of charge however you do have an option to cover a small portion of course fees at check out which would allow us to offer more classes to more individuals in the community free of charge.

**Class end times are approximate so please do not plan anything directly after class.  Class end times are approximate as everyone's individual skill and learning level will vary.  Some may need additional assistance or have additional questions.

Other Resources

Every year, approximately 14,000 people in the US are killed or injured while crossing a street or highway. Pedestrians must proceed with caution, look to the left, right and left again before crossing. If pedestrian signals are provided, cross only with the "WALK" light.  Pedestrian crossing signals are designed to get you across busy streets safely. Some signals are not automatic and must be activated, those signals have a "Push Button For Walk Signal" sign posted above a button. To activate, simply push the button and wait for the "walk sign".

  • Just like motorists, pedestrians are expected to follow certain rules of the road, including:
  • Pedestrians are to use sidewalks whenever they are safely available.
  • When sidewalks are unavailable, pedestrians must walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
  • Pedestrians must obey traffic signals and/or traffic officers.
  • At crosswalks where there isn't a traffic control signal or officer, pedestrians have the right-of-way.
  • If there aren't any crosswalks, signs or signals, the pedestrian must yield the right-of-way to all vehicles

Regardless of the right-of-way, the driver is required by the law to take great care to avoid "hitting" pedestrians.

Safe Routes to School

The central mission of Safe Routes to School is to improve children’s safety while walking and bicycling.  The program benefits stretch beyond the school day.

SRTS resources & activities help communities:

  • Build sidewalks, bicycle paths & pedestrian-friendly infrastructure
  • Reduce speeds in school zones & neighborhoods
  • Address distracted driving among drivers of all ages
  • Educate generations on pedestrian & bicycle safety

None of the nationally accepted and reputable certification providers (AHA, Red Cross, ECSI, ASHI) offer a fully online certification course for BLS, ACLS or PALS.  We are required to follow their requirements and curriculum to certify you so in-person instruction is required.  Never practicing skills with a certified instructor with equipment may increase your liability risk so all our BLSand advanced certifications require in-person instruction as required by AHA currently.  Blended learning options are available where the bookwork is completed online followed by an in-person skills practice and testing session for some course types.  We may at times offer some fully online training for other non-certification course types as available and directed by the AHA or through other national training organizations.  For example, the 6-hour NYS Insurance Point Reduction Course, Safe Kids Car Seat Basics, Opioid education, and a few others are all completely online.

Did AHA Offer any accommodations because of COVID19?
AHA allowed some course modifications because of COVID19 to increase safety.  AHA did offer a very rare accommodation of a certification extension of 120-days only for those who expired at the peak of COVID19 who may have been unable to find a class.  For those who expired from March 2020 to June 2020, the 120-day extension was available but currently, all extensions have expired.  No further extensions have been announced at this time.

Why do I not see Babysitting Preparedness, Pet First Aid CPR AED & Disaster Preparedness, or some of your other courses?
Some of our courses are offered seasonally in Spring, Summer & Fall, and may not be held in the winter as we have a low demand.  Please check back regularly for our updated yearly schedule of course offerings.

Why are classes so long?
We are an official AHA Training Site, all our class time frames are aligned with the AHA curriculum, lesson maps, educational requirements, and agendas.  Some smaller classes may finish a bit more quickly but not by much.  Classes are the designated length meeting the AHA requirement for certification.  The same is true for our ECSI, ASHI, Stop the Bleed, Safe Kids, and Mental Health First Aid classes they set the structure and curriculum requirements that must be followed for certification.

Do you hold instructor trainer classes?
We do hold AHA instructor certification classes for Heartsaver/BLS.  You must be certified as an AHA provider first.  We offer these classes 1-4 times per year based on demand.  We typically offer them in Spring & Fall so check back on the site for offerings then.  Taking this course will not make you an employee.  Anyone taking the class is considered an independent instructor and must purchase their own supplies and equipment as well as will set their own prices.  This can be a significant investment as the AHA can make unannounced price changes at any time and update the materials and curriculum at a minimum of every 5 years.  We can also hold instructor classes on-site for groups of 4 or more.  AHA will require you to be monitored regularly for compliance by your AHA Training Center (Nuvance).  AHA requires you to teach a specified minimum number of classes each year and be evaluated by your AHA training center prior to expiring to renew.  If you do not meet both requirements you will not be permitted to renew and will need to take the entire class over.  Any other instructor classes like Stop the Bleed, ECSI, ASHI, or Mental health First Aid we do not provide the training and our TC covers direct staff only.  You can visit the websites of these organizations to find out how to become an instructor.  www.stopthebleed.org   https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/become-an-instructor/
We do occasionally offer child safety seat technician Courses and update courses that utilize the Safe Kids curriculum.

Are you an authorized training center?
Yes. We are an authorized training center for the American Heart Association, Emergency Care & Safety Institute, and the American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI).  All instructors have a fully active and current instructor certification for any discipline they are teaching.  All car seat technicians are certified by Safe Kids and follow a curriculum approved by NHTSA.
